Take A Stroll Through Wellington’s Gardens

Wellington Botanic Garden covers 26 hectares of ground in Thorndon along Glenmore Street. Featuring plants from all over the world, native New Zealand bush and plenty of open lawn areas that are ideal for a sit down with a picnic, the Wellington Botanic Garden is the ideal place to spend an afternoon.

Reach the top of the garden on the Cable Car and make your way to the Beehive and Parliament Buildings after your visit is over.

You can also find the Cable Car Museum and Carter Observatory at the Botanic Garden, the former offering a look into the history of Wellington’s iconic cable car and the latter the country’s longest serving observatory and planetarium.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush Native Botanic Garden and Forest Reserve

Make your way through the treetops on the Canopy Walkway and make your way through an incredible testament to New Zealand’s native bush and forest. The Otari-Wilton’s bush features some incredible New Zealand plant life, like the 800-year-old rimu, and a number of tracks and trails that will take you through dense and lush green native forest.

It’s the only botanic garden in New Zealand that boasts a sole focus on native plants and it is one of the most impressive plant collections in the country.

Bolton Street Memorial Park

Wellington’s oldest cemetery, dating back to 1840 offers tranquility and serenity for visitors, just minutes from the city centre. With a number of notable figures buried on the grounds and a heritage rose collection that blooms at peak during November, the Memorial Park is a peaceful place to take a stroll and enjoy a breath of fresh air.
